After 14 years of marriage, we’ve learned that lasting love isn’t built on perfection love is built on growth, grace, faith, and choosing each other every day.

Marriage has challenged us, refined us, and taught us lessons we couldn’t have learned any other way. Here are 14 truths that have shaped our relationship.

1. Marriage Taught Us Not to Be Defensive

Growth begins when you stop trying to prove you’re right and start listening. Some of our biggest breakthroughs came when we chose understanding over defensiveness.

Early in our first year of marriage, my husband and I found ourselves standing across from one another in our kitchen during yet another heated disagreement.

I had my walls up.

The tension between us was so thick it felt like you could grab a kitchen knife and cut straight through it. Neither of us was really listening anymore—we were defending, explaining, and trying to be understood.

Then, in the middle of the conflict, my husband looked at me with a calm but confident voice and said five words I’ll never forget:

“I am on your side.”

Everything in me softened.

My shoulders relaxed.

The defensiveness I had been gripping so tightly began to melt away.

In that moment, I realized something profound. Somewhere along the way, our disagreement had convinced me that we were standing on opposite sides of the battle. But his words reminded me of the truth: we weren’t enemies—we were partners.

Many couples don’t realize how easily life’s pressures can convince them otherwise.

After months (or even years) of emotional disconnection, demanding careers, parenting stress, ministry responsibilities, financial pressure, or major life transitions, it can begin to feel like you’re fighting against each other instead of for each other.

You still love one another. You still share a home. You still manage the responsibilities of life together.

But somewhere beneath the surface, you’ve stopped feeling emotionally safe.

If it’s been a long time since you’ve invested in your relationship through couples therapy, you’re not alone. Many of the professional Christian couples I work with aren’t looking to save a failing marriage; they’re looking to rediscover the friendship, emotional connection, and partnership they once shared.

That’s exactly why I offer 4-hour Couples Therapy Intensives.

Unlike a traditional 50-minute session, an intensive creates sacred, uninterrupted time to slow down, understand the patterns keeping you stuck, and remember that you’re on the same team. Together, we’ll identify the cycles that create distance, strengthen emotional connection, and build healthier ways of communicating

2. Emotional Safety Matters

Choose a spouse who makes you feel safe enough to be honest, vulnerable, and fully yourself. Emotional safety creates the foundation for trust and intimacy.

If you recognized your marriage in these lessons, you’re not alone. Most couples don’t need more information, married couples need intentional space to slow down, understand one another, and rebuild connection before small issues become major ones.

3. You Will Both Change

The people who said “I do” aren’t the same people we are today. Healthy marriages don’t resist change, healthy marriages grow through change together.

One of the most unexpected gifts of marriage isn’t just growing together—it’s having a front-row seat to watch the person you love become more fully who God created them to be.

Over the years, I’ve watched my husband mature with humility, grow in wisdom, and step more confidently into his God-given gifts. And he has witnessed that same transformation in me. What a privilege it is to cheer one another on through seasons of stretching, healing, and becoming.

Healthy marriages aren’t built because two people never struggle. They’re built because two people remain committed to growing—both individually and together. As each spouse becomes more emotionally healthy, spiritually grounded, and secure in their identity, the marriage becomes stronger too.

4. Choose Someone Who Won’t Run When You Grow

Healing, maturity, and new seasons will change you. The right partner embraces your growth instead of fearing it.

5. Grief and Loss Are Part of Marriage

Every marriage will experience heartbreak. What matters is having someone who stays beside you through every difficult season.

6. Vulnerability Is Strength

Choose a partner who gives you permission to cry, process emotions, and be human without fear of judgment.

7. Laughter Is Healing

Some of our hardest seasons became lighter because we learned to laugh together. Joy is one of marriage’s greatest gifts.

8. Choose Someone Who Brings You Joy

Beyond attraction and chemistry, marry someone whose presence makes everyday life better.

9. Guard Your Ears

Not all marriage advice is helpful. Be intentional about whose voices influence your relationship.

10. Not All Marriage Advice Is Good Advice

Culture changes, but healthy marriages are still built on love, humility, forgiveness, and commitment.

11. Kindness Is a Daily Choice

Small acts of patience, gentleness, and respect strengthen a marriage more than occasional grand gestures.

12. Choose a Partner, Not a Bully

Love should never involve manipulation, intimidation, or control. A healthy spouse builds you up instead of tearing you down.

13. Spiritual Alignment Matters

Sharing faith has strengthened our marriage through life’s greatest challenges. Praying together has often changed us before it changed our circumstances.

14. Choose Someone Who Deepens Your Faith

One of the greatest blessings is having a spouse who encourages your relationship with God and helps you become more like Christ.

Final Thoughts

Fourteen years of marriage have taught us that love is more than a feeling, love is a daily decision.

Choose humility over pride.

Choose kindness over being right.

Choose growth over comfort.

Choose faith over fear.

Most importantly, keep choosing each other.

That’s what has sustained our marriage for 14 years, and it’s what we hope carries us through many more.
